Number of Beijing's Silk Street customers sets 30-year record

Beijing's Silk Street has become the main shopping market for foreign tourists, breaking the record in number of customers in 30 years. The highest recorded number of customers in a single day reached 53,028, according to Beijing Times.



According to Wang Zili, general manager of Beijing's Silk Street Market, during the Olympic Games, a large number of foreign tourists came to Silk Street to purchase traditional and characteristically Chinese goods. The number of customers almost doubled compared to that before the Olympics. On August 19, the highest number of customers was received since the establishment of the market in 1978. In the first week of the Olympics, Silk Street received a total of 0.3 million customers, among which more than 0.2 million were foreign customers, with sales exceeding 100 million yuan. As for the sale of goods, sales of the most popular custom-tailored clothes and silk more than doubled; and jewelry, handicrafts, tea, porcelain sales more than doubled.



Since August, people from 204 countries and regions involved in the Olympics have been to Silk Street to shop, including 20 heads of state and their spouses.
