China has 594 millin city residents

According to the MOHURD, China has 594 millin city residents and the rate of urbanization climbed to 44.9% by the end of 2007. This number has increased 0.95% per year since 1982. Currently China has 655 cities and nearly 20,000 towns; and has initially established a multi-level system of large cities as the center, middle cities as the backbone and small towns as the foundation.

However, China's cities and towns are still facing great challenges in development. Sharpening resource and environmental limitations, the striking binary structure of cities and towns, the widening gap between the devlopment of cities and towns, and a lack of sustainable infrastructure are all tough issues.
